That morning, on our way to Lake Toba from Medan me and my cousins stopped by at Pematangsiantar, the second largest city in the North Sumatra province. After driving for two hours we arrived at a place in downtown Pematangsiantar that looks like a monastery. The place’s called Vihara Avalokitesvara, some parts of the buildings were still under construction and there’s a 22.8 m Guanyin Statue, said to the the tallest one in South East Asia. Guanyin is the deity of mercy in East Asian Buddhism.
